Death to 3DS V1: Part 2

Written by PAAY | Nov 19, 2021 11:15:36 AM

In our last blog, we recommended that merchants plan and execute the move to EMV 3DS (aka version 2), and be done with this change by October 2022 (now).

While upgrades are relatively easy and straightforward, we’ve laid out here some steps to take.

But first, let's recap where we are today.

MasterCard and Visa are moving to EMV 3DS version 2 in two steps between now and October 2022:

  1. Deprecate the stand-in service that the payment associations offer for version 1, which is occurring this month

  2. Remove the liability shift, which occurs in October ‘22

Having said that, not all acquirers/gateways/processors are ready for version 2 today.

Here Are Some Tangible Steps We Recommend

Tip #1 - Add data

All merchants add version 2 data to the PAAY dashboard as soon as possible

Tip #2 - Define your protocol

When sending a 3DS request to PAAY, merchants will continue to define the protocol (version 1 or 2) in the request message based on the Acquirer/processor/gateway capabilities for the specific MID.

  • Note: The 2.0 registration information will always be overridden in the PAAY system by the protocol requested in the merchant request.

Tip #3 - Check, double check, and triple check

Check with the gateway/processor/acquirer regarding the status of their upgrade to EMV 3DS (version 2). If they are not ready yet, please ask them when they will comply with the specification.

Tip #4 - Get in on the act

Merchants and Resellers can help encourage the ecosystem to do the right thing and upgrade to the newest version.

Take Away - This Is A Good Thing For Everybody

Overall, this migration is a good thing for everyone in the value chain:

  • Consumers will have a better experience

  • Merchants will see more transactions protected

  • More transactions will be frictionless

  • Everyone in the value chain will benefit from the anticipated authorization increases.
